Dotty Flower Nail Art

I have been lacking inspiration for nail art recently so I thought what better way to get some ideas than by browsing through my Pinterest boards to be inspired.  I fancied using blue as my main colour so at least I had a starting point.

I came across this lovely design by @naildecor (on Instagram) which I had pinned quite some time ago, but thought it was perfect.  I didn't copy it like for like, but really love the combination of blue, white and silver.  

I started with Essie Bikini So Teeny on my thumb, index finger, and thumb.  Its quite a thin formula, so I used three coats to get full opacity.  For the white base I used Models Own Snow White and then used a medium dotting tool to create my flowers and dots.  I started with the silver centres for the flowers so I could position them where I wanted, then I went in with the blue for the petals.  I added in random silver dots with OPI Turn On The Haute Light once the flowers were finished to fill in the spaces.  I was really pleased with these, and I got lots of lovely compliments.

Hopefully this will get me back into the swing of things with some better nail art soon.  Have you tried any new techniques recently that you'd recommend trying out?

OPI Spotty Nails

When I went away in December I thought it would be silly not to stop by the duty free to see what nail goodies I could find and I came across the travel exclusive OPI  Coca Cola set.  It comes with 6 mini bottles of beautiful colours.  I have used a few of the colours so far and really like them, but this is the first time any of them have appeared in a blog post.

Polish Party: Halloween - Frankenstein Nails

It's Polish Party time again - Yay!  This month's theme is Halloween... Well how could it not be?

I was a bit stuck for what to do, because you can often see a lot of the same things when looking at Halloween nail art, and whilst I haven't steered too far away from 'the norm', I hope I have come up with something a bit different.

I wanted to keep to the same colour pallet on all my nails as I didn't want too many colours all trying to compete with the others, so once I had decided on Frankenstein nails I chose the others based around that.  So obviously I had green and black.  I then paired those with silver and a bit of glitter.

I painted my thumb and ring finger in the limited edition green from Barry M that was out in the summer from Superdrug.  Then my middle finger and little finger are painted in Sterling Silver from Models Own. To finish off my base colours I used Knockout from Revlon on my index finger.

For the details on my silver nails I have done some simple stripes and dots.  I used the Models Own nail art pen for the stripes and a dotting tool dipped in my Revlon black polish.  On my index finger I kept it simple with a coat of Startlet by Jessica.  It's such a pretty multi toned glitter that would go with anything.

My thumb nail is a little bit more fancy.  I have done the ends of a plaited nail just on the tip.  I added a diagonal stripe in silver first and then another in the opposite direction in black.  As you can see from the photograph the silver over the green has actually gone a greenish gold colour.  It's a happy accident as I really like it, but obviously wasn't meant to be like that.

On my ring finger we have a not so scary, but rather cute Frankenstein.  I simply added some dots of black for his hair near my cuticle and then wiggled the polish around to create the cover required.  I then added two white dots for his eyes with a smaller black dot in the middle.  Using my nail art pen with striper I added his little stitched up mouth.

I really enjoyed doing this design even though it wasn't what I had originally planned.  Don't for get to check out the other girls taking part in Polish Party this month x

Miss Sporty: Metal Flip - Aurora Borealis

I had a busy weekend this weekend, but it was busy in a good way!  I reached 200 followers over on Twitter so I had a bit of a mini giveaway to celebrate! The lovely Samantha from @Smugginsx was the winner and I have posted off her prize today, so hopefully she will get it in the next day or two.  And on the same day I won a giveaway from Barry M!!! Eeeek!! So exciting! I won their whole confetti collection and it should be with me soon!! Yay!!  I will post about them when they arrive!

Anyway, onto the main point of my post... This week I went for something simple.  As I mentioned last week I was bought Miss Sporty Metal Flip in Aurora Borealis, and although I used it in my ombré last week it got a little lost, so I said I would do a swatch of it and talk about it in more detail.

The Metal Flip polishes from Miss Sporty are duochrome effect polishes that shift, or flip, between colours depending on the light.  Aurora Borealis is bluey silver polish with hints of purple and gold.  I have taken some other pictures in different lights to give you an idea of how it changes.  Above you can see my normal blog type picture taken in a light cube.  Here you can see that it's more blue showing some hints of purple.

Essie: The Girls Are Out

I had a very busy and hot weekend clearing out the loft and it was not a friend to my nails at all! I was going to take a picture of the damage, but it was just too sad!  But as a treat after working so hard I happened to stop by the Essie display at Boots and find my nails a lovely treat!

 

 

The Girls Are Out is such a pretty pink with the tiniest fleck of silver glitter in (hence my silver accent nail just to jazz things up a little bit!).  The colour is so rich, and the formula is great.  If you were careful you could get away with one coat, but I chose to do two.  This made the colour even more intense and bright.  My accent nail is Models Own Sterling Silver.

 

 

Nothing much else to add other than... look how pretty!! x

Christmas Plaits Nail Art

My nails have got more Christmassy this week with some festive Christmas plaits.  I first saw these plaits (or fish tail) nails a while ago now and tired them when I first saw them as the effect was something quite different from things that I had seen before.  But now getting round to Christmas designs I thought I would give them another go in festive colours.

I decided that I wanted to create the plait design on my thumb nail and ring finger,so I painted the other three fingers with silver from Models Own.  I had already picked white, red and green to be the colours for the plaited nails.  To start off the plaits I painted the nails on each hand with white and left this to dry.  Taking my next colour I then painted a diagonal stripe.  I again left this to dry.  Taking my third colour I made a diagonal stripe in the other direction.  Leaving each stripe to dry in between I then just continued down my nail alternating my three different colours until I reached the tip of my nail.

This can take a while, but I think the effect is worth it in the end.

Tiffany & Co Nails

A while ago now I did a different Tiffany & Co. nail design that I have included in this post.  I had seen it on Pinterest and loved it so thought I'd give it a go.  For my first go at this design I used Orly Gumdrop as this was a pretty close match in colour, because living in the UK we don't have China Glaze (I had read up on dupes of China Glaze For Audrey).

My mum went to America and I asked her to bring me back a For Audrey so that I could have another go again at the design with the perfect colour!  I didn't want to do exactly the same again for the design this time round so I decided to go with an accent finger painted in silver, the rest of my nails in For Audrey with silver tips. My thinking being that hopefully whatever might be in the Tiffany box/bag would be a lovely shiny silver.

White Tiger and Glitter Nail Art

This week I was inspired by cutepolish.  She had posted a Glitzy Rainbow Tiger nail design and I really liked it.  I wanted to give the tiger stripes a go and I liked the glitter and stripe combo.  I didn't want rainbow tiger nails though, so I decided to adapt the design slightly and make it a white tiger design.

To create this look I painted all my nails with Models Own Sterling Silver polish.  After this had dried, to create an accent nail on my ring finger, I topped the silver with Models Own Freak Out from the Glitterball collection.  To create the tiger stripes on the rest of the nails I used a black striper from Andrea Fulerton.  All you need to do is have a very small amount of polish on the brush, start at the edge of the nail and flick the brush towards the centre of the nail.  You then repeat the same steps again next to your first set of lines to make tiger stripes rather than just single flicks.  As always I finish off with a top coat to protect the design.

Industrial Silver Sparkle Nails with Tutorial

I thought I would do my nails to match the British summer sky - Steel grey and rainy! I think they have an industrial feel to them as well.  I really like the effect though and thought that you might like to learn step by step how to create this look.

What I used to create this design:
- Make up sponge wedge
- Base coat and top coat
- Barry M nail varnish in Grey
- E.L.F nail varnish in Pearl
- Models Own nail vanish in Sterling Silver
- Cotton buds
- Nail vanish remover

Step one:

Apply a base coat to protect your nails from staining.  Then apply a coat of grey nail varnish and wait for it to dry.  Some of the Bary M nail varnishes are quite opaque so you might only need one coat.  It's up to you of course.  I applied one coat.

Step two:

Take a pearl or white varnish and drip some onto some scrap paper or similar.  Then using the corner of the make up sponge wedge dab it in the varnish and then over the tip of your nail about half way up.  The E.L.F nail vanishes come in lots of different colours and the pearl works really well here as it lets the base colour show through. Repeat this over all your nails and again leave it to dry.

Step three:

Repeat step two but this time using a silver glitter polish, only sponging onto the tip of the nail.  Models Own glitters are lovely and are fairly opaque so work well for this design.  Then dab off the sponge onto the paper, so barely any varnish remains.  Dab lightly over the remaining grey to create a very subtle small sparkle.

Once this is dry apply a top coat to protect your design and clean up any varnish from around your nails using a cotton bud and some nail varnish remover.
